FOUR ADVENTURE-FILLED DAYS ON THE WILD WEST COAST OF TASMANIA

A Wild West Coast Adventure

This four-day all-inclusive adventure package is designed to fuel your sense of adventure and escape into some of Tassie's wildest and remote areas. With our on-trail guide and local knowledge, you'll ride some epic backcountry mountain bike trails at Mt Owen (descents from 985m) and Silver City (descents from 728m) MTB networks, alongside your choice of canyoning at Cradle Mountain or cruising the Gordon River overnight onboard the Stormbreaker yacht.

The West Coast is a place of special beauty. It requires planning, patience, and respect.

It can be calm and tranquil one moment and stormy the next. Mountain peaks vanish and appear with the change of clouds; you can get sunburnt in the morning but need a wood fire in the evening. Where rain is measured in metres and the locals play football on gravel. Prepare to immerse yourself in the wild West Coast for an unforgettable adventure.

Accommodation is beautifully appointed in the small country town of Queenstown, along with a support vehicle and bike hire. Your holiday is hassle-free, completely immersing you within this wild and remote part of Tasmania.

  • We ask that you arrive the day before your tour starts so the entire group can get an early start the following day. Afternoon or evening flights work well. Once you leave the airport terminal, you’ll be met by one of our team who will drive you into Launceston (or Hobart) and your hotel.

If arriving into Launceston, we recommend staying with our partners at Change Overnight which is an easy short walk into the CBD for drinks and dinner.

Note: this night’s accommodation is not included in your package. This is available as an add-on at time of booking.

  • Departure time: 9am

    Lunch 12.30pm

    Riding from 1.30pm

Dress for adventure, we’ve got around 3.5 hours to the West Coast and then we’ll head straight to the trails for a guided ride.

    Location: Mt Owen

Arriving in Queenstown for afternoon shuttles on Mt Owen, first descending The Long Spur or North Owen Descent to Linda Valley, followed by Waterfall back to town.

Check into accommodation, and head to Moonscape for a drink before a classic pub dinner.

  • Departure time: 9am

    Riding from 10:00am

    Silver City Trail Network

We begin the day at Zeehan’s Silver City MTB network.

    Lunch 12pm (on trail)

We’ll ride the full Silver City network, including Western Odyssey - Featherstone - Silver Lining - Stormsdown. Followed by laps of the flowy Oonah Hill Descent.

Concluding the day back in Queenstown at the Paragon Theatre for dinner and a movie.

  • Choose your own adventure day!

Option 1: Canyoning at Dove Canyon, Cradle Mountain with our friends at Cradle Mountain Canyons returning to Queenstown that evening.

Dove Canyon is Tassie adventure at its best. We walk through pristine rain forest to this stunning canyon. After abseiling in, we spend the day walking and floating through the canyon and doing what we have to do to navigate the obstacles we find along the way. The main obstacles are six waterfalls which we abseil, jump or slide off!

One of the highlights is the Laundry Chute - a ten metre high natural slide that shoots you out of a large cave (which we call The Pit) into a big open pool. Very unique and highly exhilarating.

This is a committing trip - once you're in, there's only one way out and there is no way to walk around any of the waterfalls. Having said that, most of our clients have no canyoning experience, and it doesn't require any particular skills as such - just an ability to swim and a sense of adventure.

    OR

Option 2: sail the pristine calm waters of the Gordon River onboard the oceangoing yacht Stormbreaker with our friends at Southwest Expeditions. This tour includes a visit to the notorious penal settlement at Sarah Island, before setting sail down the Gordon River to the yacht’s overnight destination. Enjoy some kayaking, trout fishing, watch the glow worms afterdark or simply relax on deck. Includes overnight cabin and meals.

Rising early next morning, the river will offer you your best chance to capture its endlessly fascinating reflections on film. We’ll depart around 8.30am, which will allow you to enjoy your breakfast while cruising downstream. Upon leaving the river we will aim to catch a breeze and complete a memorable expedition amongst the majestic surrounding mountains of Macquarie Harbour, arriving back at Strahan at approximately 12 noon.

  • For those who canyoned the day before:

    Accommodation checkout: 9am

    Riding from 9:30am

On our final morning, we will venture back to Mt Owen to take in the epic views of the wild West Coast.

We’ll ride the lower network before departing for Strahan to catch up with those onboard Stormbreaker.

    Lunch 12pm

    Depart for Launceston by 1.30pm.

We will drop you at your accommodation in Launceston (we recommend booking with our partners at Change Overnight), or at the airport for a late departure (flights must leave no earlier than 6.30pm).

Note: this night’s accommodation is not included in your package.

More about this package

Pack your sense of adventure and immerse yourself in the remote and wild West Coast of Tasmania for an unforgettable adventure.

  • Tasmania’s newest trail networks, Mt Owen & Silver City are like no other. This is the rugged and wild West Coast of Tasmania at its best. Back country, remote, exposed and raw.

Completely devoid of trees, Mt Owen’s bare and rocky surface is scarred from years of mining. At 1146m high, it makes for uninterrupted panoramic views of Tasmania’s western coastline to one side, and the central and south west mountainous wilderness on the other, including Frenchman’s Cap. Towering over the township of Queenstown, your views from Mt Owen’s downhill trails are equally awe-inspiring and daunting.

The Silver City trail network is located on the outskirts of historic Zeehan. Journey through rainforest, historic mine fields and button grass plains to the remote and imposing peaks of the Heemskirk Range. There is up to 35km of adventure riding on world class trails, providing an unforgettable and truly unique West Coast experience. This exposed and remote mountainous region is not for the faint hearted!

  • Tasmanian weather is highly unpredictable, so pack for all seasons. You will need appropriate riding gear, wet weather gear and casual wear for the times you’re not on the trails.

See our Pack List for details.

  • Payment

A deposit is required to secure your booking. The balance will then be invoiced to you with final payment due 30 days prior to departure.

Credit cards are accepted, but a surcharge is added.

    Minimum numbers

Tours require a minimum of 4 persons to run. In the event that the minimum numbers cannot be fulfilled 28 days prior to the tour commencing we will contact you to discuss additional charges if you wish to move ahead with your tour without the minimum numbers, alternate tour dates that you could join or refunding your deposit.

    Bike Hire

Our hire e-bikes consist of Trek and Norco, each fitted with flat pedals and complementary helmet. Please provide accurate weight and height measurements for bike size and suspension set up. If any measurements have been guessed, please take the time to record these accurately and resubmit to us via bookings@gointothewild.com.au. An Into The Wild staff member will also double check these ahead of time.

You are welcome to bring your own helmet.

    Waiver of Liability

Mountain biking does involve a level of risk. All riders will be required to sign a Waiver of Liability prior to commencing your tour.

    Insurance

We highly recommend travel insurance to cover any unexpected delays, lost luggage, interruptions or medical treatments.
